HISTORY
Mesa has a long and proud history in aviation and aerospace. With nearly perfect flying weather all year, Mesa is home to two airports that were instrumental in the training of military pilots.
In 1941, Williams Air Force Base was built to serve as the Army Air Corps West Coast Training Center where thousands of pilots were trained for battle in World War II.
Later the Base served as the home of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). In 1993, the entire Base - except for AFRL- was closed as part of a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). In 1994, the former Base reopened as a commercial airport and is now named Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
In 2011, the City of Mesa leased the AFRL from the USAF and it became Arizona Laboratories for Security & Defense Research (AZLabs). In 2014, the City assumed full ownership of the property and buildings and continues to operate it today.
Since the City's purchase, we strive to enhance AZLabs' capabilities and features to improve the site for innovative research and development to occur.
MANAGEMENT
AZLabs is owned and managed by the City of Mesa.
